If you think you've been scammed, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and start recovering.
1. Cut Off Contact
As soon as you suspect something isn't right, stop all communication. Don't reply, don't engage, and don't try to challenge the scammer.
If the scam happened on social media, report the account and block it. If someone is pretending to be a business, notify your state or territory's fair trading authority. They may be able to investigate or issue a warning to others.
2. Contact Your Bank
If money was taken or your account details were shared, call your bank straight away. They can freeze your account, block your card, and help prevent further transactions.
Even if no money was lost, let them know if your personal information was exposed. Scammers often use stolen details to open new accounts or commit identity fraud.
For scams involving cryptocurrency, money transfer apps, or gift cards, reach out to the relevant provider directly.
3. Get Help from IDCARE
IDCARE is a free support service for people affected by scams, identity theft, and cybercrime. They'll help you build a personalised recovery plan and guide you through the process.
You can contact them on 1800 595 160 or submit a request through their website. Their support is ongoing, so you can reach out more than once if needed.
4. Report the Scam
Once your accounts are secure, report the scam to Scamwatch. You can also file a police report online if you think it's necessary.
Let people close to you know what happened. Talking about it helps you process the experience and can also protect others from falling into the same trap.
5. Watch for Follow-Up Scams
Some scammers return with fake offers to help you recover your money. These are scams too.
Be cautious of anyone who contacts you unexpectedly offering help, especially if they ask for payment or personal details. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
6. Look After Your Wellbeing
Being scammed can leave you feeling embarrassed, angry, or anxious. These reactions are normal, but they can be hard to deal with, especially if there's financial stress involved.
Talk to someone you trust, or reach out to support services like Lifeline or Beyond Blue. You don't have to go through it alone.
